Pride At Work Triennial Convention

About Pride At Work: P@W is an officially recognized constituency group of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations, P@W organizes mutual support between the organized labor movement and the LGBT community to further social and economic justice.

Dear Members,

I had the pleasure of representing our local lodge at the Pride at Work (P@W) convention held in Orlando, FL. In attendance was members and leadership of many labor organizations representing various industries and issues faced by all workers including those who are LGBT.

These include: United Food & Commercial Workers, UNITE HERE!, Working America, Center for American Progress, SAG-AFTRA, CWA, AFL-CIO, United We Dream, United Steelworkers, GetEQUAL, Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, SERO Project, Black Youth Project, Association of Flight Attendants, A. Phillip Randolph Institute, and Equality Florida.

Guest speakers and panelists covered many labor-related topics including healthcare, immigration, and civil, human & women's rights. Presenations were made about non-traditional organizing strategies from representatives of the Dancer's Alliance, Dream Defenders, FIght for $15, and Our Walmart. In addition, the mebership approved a scathing resolution that calls on member organizations to stop funding the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) until the advocacy group addresses what Pride at Work sees as systemic issues and key problems with HRC’s Corporate Equality Index. Here is the resolution.

Until HRC remedies the issues outlined in detail by the resolution, “Pride at Work calls upon all labor unions, labor federations, and labor-affiliated organizations to cease funding HRC at all levels until these matters are addressed in a manner that shows HRC stands in solidarity with all working Americans for a fair, just and equal society.”
